When you think of wildflowers in spring, do you think of the desert?

This time of year is amazing for change in the Big Desert State Forest on Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagalk Country. Spring marks the start of the wildflower season when the arid landscape is transformed with vibrant colours, making it a must-visit destination.

During this time, you’ll experience the colours and smells of sandhill wattles, silver banksia, erect guinea-flower, fringe myrtle, emu bush, spider and greenhood orchids and many other species.

If you’re seeking some warmer weather while other parts of the state see out the end of the cooler months, the Big Desert is an ideal getaway. Stay a few nights at Stockmans Campground or Berrook Campground and enjoy the new camping facilities. Otherwise, see for yourself why so many describe the newly upgraded Big Billy Bore Campground as a special place to visit.

For a day trip, be sure to visit Hermans Hill near Rainbow in the southeastern corner of the Big Desert. This site has a 3km walking trail to a lookout tower at a natural high point that delivers beautiful views across the desert.

Finally, if you’re a four-wheel drive enthusiast check out the Mallee 4WD routes and explore the remote and stark beauty of the region. These challenging routes are recommended for experienced or trained drivers.
