Victoria is fast becoming Australia’s premier four-wheel driving destination. Here you’ll discover diverse and dramatic landscapes, more than 45,000km of vehicle tracks in forests and parks and hundreds of campgrounds, walking trails and natural, cultural and historic attractions along route networks.

From the rugged mountains of the High Country to the expansive deserts of the Mallee, four-wheel drive (4WD) enthusiasts of all skill levels will find an adventure suited to you and your vehicle.

All open formed roads and tracks in state forests are accessible to 4WD vehicles, providing plenty of rocky and rugged terrain and opportunities for river crossings, challenging climbs and scenic stopovers.

Find a 4WD track

One of the easiest ways to find tracks in Victoria is by downloading the More to  Explore app.

This free app allows you to search for specific four-wheel drive touring routes and camping sites, as well as download offline maps for when you don’t have mobile network coverage. The app also shows when tracks are closed to help you plan ahead.

Staying safe on tracks

Before you hit the road, our partners at 4WD Victoria have shared some key safety tips for drivers of all levels:

  • Check for seasonal road closures on the More to Explore app.
  • If encountering water crossings, make sure they are at a safe depth, not flowing too quick and there are no hidden obstacles. Remember that winter rain may bring higher water levels.
  • You may need to drop tyre pressures on muddy, wet tracks. This can help prevent you getting bogged, and also helps to protect the environment and reduce damage to tracks. Carry tyre gauges and deflators and make sure you have a compressor or can easily get to a nearby town to reinflate your tyres.
  • Let people at home know your route and when you're expected back, especially when travelling in colder climates and where there’s snow. Bring extra food and water and plenty of spare warm clothing.
  • Consider a 4WD training program; no matter your skill level, there’s always more to learn!
