A large fire in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park was contained in early January following weeks of challenging work by emergency services in difficult terrain and extreme fire danger days.
However, it was closed again after several new fires broke out on Monday 27 January. Please refer to the Parks Victoria website for the most up-to-date information about its status.
While the 27 January fires are believed to have been caused by lightning, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) crews also worked in very steep, rocky terrain earlier in January to contain a 7-hectare fire at Boroka Lookout in the Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park that is suspected to have been started by a campfire.
Even if a total fire ban has not been declared, we encourage campers to consider the need for a campfire on hot or windy days. Plan ahead and think about alternatives for cooking such as a portable butane cooktop.
To get back out and enjoy this unique and much-loved region and support local businesses that have suffered during recent closures, consider visiting state forest campgrounds to the west of the park at nearby Rocklands Reservoir including:

If you’re travelling to the area from Melbourne or further east, along the way you’ll find Lake Burrumbeet which has plenty of quiet spots by the water for fishing, boating, picnics and more.
Alternatively, head to Mt Cole State Forest for a variety of recreation sites, from Ditchfield Campground to the scenic Beeripmo Campground and Walk that recently reopened following fires in early 2024.
These campgrounds are all free and you don’t need to book ahead with sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
