About this walk

You’ll find the Mt Welcome hike in the Mitta Mitta Valley, 4.5 hours north-east of Melbourne. It’s located near the small township of Mitta Mitta at the southernmost end of the Mitta Mitta Valley on the foothills of the Great Dividing Range. Much of the upper Mitta Valley was shaped by the discovery of gold in the 1850s and relics from this time remain.

This is a steep and challenging hike, recommended for experienced walkers with good navigation skills. The track is unformed so be sure to wear sturdy footwear.

Mt Welcome hike is one of a number of walking tracks in Mitta Mitta that start at the Historic Park Reserve. Here you will find parking, picnic tables and a display of old mining equipment.

Stunning views and spring blooms

As you follow the spur line on your way to the summit, soak in the spectacular views of Mitta valley and surrounds. During spring, enjoy a more colourful walk with wildflowers in bloom.

If you start the hike from Mitta Mitta township it is 2WD accessible. If you wish to start hiking from the top, the track is 4WD accessible when it is dry.
