About this picnic area
Pearson Point sits on the southern edge of the Avon-Mt Hedrick Scenic Reserve. Visit for spectacular views over Lake Glenmaggie and across to the Strzelecki Ranges.
The forested foothills of the lower Macalister River catchment can also be seen stretching to Mt Useful and Licola in the west.
Use this elevated vantage point to enjoy birdwatching. Look out for wedgetailed eagles and other birdlife.
The Avon-Mt Hedrick Scenic Reserve is a vast landscape of dry open forest and wildflowers. Its rocky escarpments and high peaks offer sweeping views of the surrounding area.
Connections to the past
The original inhabitants of the region were the Brayakaulung people who lived on the river flats of the Avon River. For thousands of years they gathered fish and shellfish from the nearby coastal waters. They used timber and game from these forests as a source of food and building materials for shelters, canoes and various tools.
The Braiakaulung were one of 5 tribes that composed the major nation of the Central Gippsland region, the Gunaikurnai.
