About this picnic area
Arguably the state’s most iconic High Country hut, Craig's Hut sits on the top of Mt Stirling offering unrivalled panoramic views over Mt Buller.
The hut was originally built in 1982 as the set for the film The Man from Snowy River. It was sadly destroyed by the Great Divide Fire in 2006 but rebuilt and reopened to the public 2 years later.
Set on a grassy knoll surrounded by snow gums, this scenic picnic spot offers limitless photo opportunities.
Access the hut and these magnificent views either directly by 4WD or via a 1.2 km walking track. The track starts at the Circuit Road Picnic Area, 1 km before the Craig's Hut turn-off.
Help protect our historic huts by following the High Country Huts Code.
About this walking track
A stunning 3 km walk amongst the low snow gums with views across the surrounding alpine valleys, leading up to the historical Craigs Hut. Perched atop Mt Stirling, Craig’s Hut offers stunning views of the ranges and is one of the regions most photographed landmarks.
First built as a set for The Man From Snowy River film, the hut has now become an iconic symbol of Australia’s settler history.
Drive, horse-ride, mountain-bike or hike, no matter how you get to the hut, make sure to pack a picnic. Craig's Hut is 19 km from Telephone Box Junction and can be accessed via the Circuit Road. There is a 4WD track that leads directly to the hut, or there is a 1.2 km walking track which begins at the Day Visitor Area.
