Good to know
The trail can become inaccessible in high flows during winter and spring and Tobacco Flat is seasonally closed to vehicles from June to October.
About this trail
The Howqua River and valley are in the Upper Goulburn State Forest, about one hour from Mansfield and 3.5 hours north-east of Melbourne.
This historic area was once a major trade route for the Taungurung Peoples, the Traditional Owners of this region. It was also the site of the 1860s gold rush and remnants from this time remain.
The Howqua River Walk is one of the many Howqua hills trails which is suitable for horseriding. It follows the river flats and offers multiple river crossings and gentle hills.
Enjoy a walk and a swim
This shared trail passes through beautiful native forest and bushland, and has more than 30 river crossings along the journey offering great spots for a swim along the way.
Leaving from either Tobacco Flat or Running Creek, you’ll likely meet other bushwalkers, anglers or horse riders on this popular walk.
