About this tour
This 4WD tour starts from the historic township of Jamieson south of Mansfield and finishes at the historic Kevington Hotel, a cherished old pub which has been in continuous operation since 1862.
The route is approximately 90km and will take a full day to complete, if you choose to explore some of the points of interest along the way.
It takes in panoramic views from Mt Terrible Fire Tower, the historic gold mining areas of Gaffneys Creek and Tunnel Bend, which was dug in 1866 as a diversion tunnel to allow mining of the bed of the Goulburn River but failed to divert the water successfully.
A changed landscape
The Goulburn River is Victoria’s largest river basin, reaching the Murray River near Echuca. Little townships appeared along the Upper Goulburn as gold seekers sought new opportunities from 1860 onwards. These townships have mostly disappeared and are now little more than localities, due to the end of the gold era and from the ravages of the 1939 fires in this area.
Make time to take a look around Jamieson before you start the tour. Surrounded by bush-clad mountains, the colours here are particularly beautiful in autumn.
