About this site

This scenic and historically unique site is located in Mt Disappointment State Forest. Straddling the Great Dividing Range, this is one of Melbourne’s most accessible forest areas for recreation. The area suffered severe bushfire damage in 1982 and 2009, but the forest is regenerating. It continues to provide a haven for wildlife, visitors and recreation activities.

Mt Disappointment State Forest is the traditional land of the Kulin nation. The Wurundjeri tribe looked after the land in the south and the Taungurung tribe looked after the land in the north.

Number One Camp has a fascinating history. In the 1940s it housed 75 Italian prisoners of war who were supervised by members of the Australian military.

They cut firewood, cleared timber and built forest roads. Post-World War II, European immigrant workers were encouraged to settle in Australia and resided here. Up until the 1970s, Number One Camp housed many foresters.

Today you’ll find a large campground set up with picnic facilities and horse yards.
