Warning: Uncovered mine shafts and mining workings are scattered throughout the Buckland Valley. Extreme care should be taken when exploring the area. Do not leave formed vehicle or walking tracks.
There is no toilet available at this site. The closest toilet is located 500 m to the south at Leinster Flat campground.
This campground is accessed along an unsealed road which is suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles most of year, but can become very rough and slippery during wet periods. Care should also be taken as cattle graze in this area and often wander onto the road and into camping areas.
About this campground
Located 19 km from the Buckland Bridge, New Chum Flat is an open, flat campground with trees and vegetation providing natural screening between sites. This makes it ideal for more private camping for individuals and smaller groups. The site is not suitable for larger caravans or motorhomes.
The site is named New Chum Flat as it was historically referred to during the mining era which began in the Buckland Valley in the 1850s. This was a residential area for workers associated with the quartz reef mines, evidenced by the relics of stone buildings, mine workings and surrounding non-native trees located around the site.
There are several good access points to the river from the campground, where the water is mostly shallow and fast flowing.
