About this campground
Nestled in the heart of Bentley Plain, just east of Swifts Creek, Moscow Villa was once the summer residence for local fire tower man and legendary bushman, Bill Ah Chow. Bill completed construction of this log and stone hut on 7 January 1942, the same day the Battle of Moscow was won in World War 2 – giving the hut its name.
Legend has it that Bill was once challenged about his loyalty to the nation given the name of the hut. To this, Bill was said to reply that the name 'Moscow Villa' was, in fact, an acronym for 'My Own Summer Cottage Officially Welcomes Visitors Inside, Light Luncheon Available'.
Today, visitors are welcome inside the hut where they can admire its unique construction and read more about Bill. For anyone looking to camp overnight, you can pitch a tent or roll out a swag in the small campsite at the rear of the hut which includes a firepit and picnic facilities. If this campsite is occupied, a larger camping area is available a short 3-minute walk away at nearby Bentley Plain, which also boasts a hut, shelter, firepits, tables and a toilet.
Moscow Villa is just one of several iconic stops along the Nunniong Forest Drive, which takes in several huts, historic relics, pleasant walks and scenic views through the Bentley Plain and Nunniong State Forest.
