About this campground
Located in the iconic Victorian High Country, just 20 minutes south of Licola, The Holding Paddock offers camping on the banks of the Macalister River surrounded by rolling hills.
Historically, the site served as an overnight stop for holding cows during the two-week journey from Wonnangatta Station to the sale yards in Heyfield – giving the site its name.
The campground has 10 flat campsites of varying sizes for caravans and camper trailers, as well as vehicle-based and tent camping. Plenty of fire pits, picnic tables and toilet facilities are available, and there's a short walking track down to the river providing easy water access.
Accessing the site
The Holding Paddock is accessible by 2WD along the sealed Licola Road which connects Heyfield to Licola. However for those looking to explore more of the surrounding High Country during their stay, a 4WD is recommended.
This site can be used as a starting point for experienced four-wheel drivers doing the popular Wonnangatta Iconic 4WD Tour, which can be accessed from Licola via the Tamboritha Road. This multi-day trip takes in several High Country Huts, as well as the breathtaking Pinnacles Lookout, Billy Goat Bluff Track and historic Wonnangatta Station.
